To support learning recovery in schools in the Philippines, GBF STEM Collab recently concluded the ARAL Series: Master Class on Social-Emotional Learning for Remediation, held last February 2026.
The three-part webinar gathered around 90,000 Key Stage 1 teachers and ARAL tutors nationwide, highlighting the importance of social-emotional learning (SEL) for remediation as schools continue addressing learning gaps among students.
The ‘ARAL SEL’ Series focused on helping teachers build supportive learning environments while implementing remediation programs.Through the sessions, participants explored ways to strengthen their own well-being as educators, create safe and inclusive ARAL learning spaces, and promote a school-wide approach to social-emotional learning.

The series was organized by Gokongwei Brothers Foundation through a partnership with the Department of Education-National Educators Academy of the Philippines, ChildFund Philippines, and SEAMEO INNOTECH. The collaboration demonstrates how organizations can work together to strengthen teacher training and capacity building in the education sector.
Throughout the sessions, speakers encouraged educators to see social-emotional learning as an integral part of teaching.
“Social-emotional learning is for all of us. It’s something we can naturally integrate into our teaching and school culture,” shared Director Gerson Abesamis of the DepEd-Bureau of Learning Delivery.
Dir. Abesamis added that even small SEL practices in classrooms can help build safe and thriving learning environments for learners.

Meanwhile, Michelle Sarabillo Senior Specialist/Head for Teacher Quality Development of SEAMEO INNOTECH emphasized that SEL has always been an integral part of teachers’ daily classroom practice. “SEL is not new. This is something that our teachers are already practicing. Perhaps there is room for improvement, which is why we advocate practicing SEL with purpose, clarity, and intention.”

According to Marlene Floresca, Senior Program Specialist for Education & Child Protection of ChildFund Philippines, strengthening the education system requires strong partnerships. “It cannot be done by one actor alone. Collaboration allows organizations to maximize each other’s strengths,” she shared.

The ARAL Series: Master Class on Social-Emotional Learning for Remediation reflects a shared commitment to supporting Filipino teachers as they guide learners through recovery.
By bringing together educators, experts, and partner organizations, the initiative strengthens teacher training and capacity building while promoting a safer and more supportive learning environment.
Through these efforts, the Gokongwei Brothers Foundation continues to advocate for teachers and support professional development that helps schools respond to the evolving needs of learners.
