GBF seeks to promote STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education through scholarship grants, a technical learning facility, and collaborations with strategic partners.

Scholarship Programs with JG Summit Business Units

In partnership with JG Summit Business Units Year established: 2012

GBF grants a scholarship to outstanding students taking science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) degrees in select top-ranked Philippine universities. This is done in partnership with the different business units of the JG Summit group. The GBF-JG Summit Business Units STEM Scholarship for Excellence aims to groom future leaders of JG Summit companies by providing industry-standard on-the-job training to scholars and employment opportunities after they graduate.

Partner JG Summit Business Units include JG Summit Petrochemicals Group, South Star Drug, Robinsons Land Corporation, Robinsons Retail Holdings, Inc., URC Agro-Industrial Group, URC Flour and Pasta Division, URC Sugar and Renewables Group, URC Branded Consumer Foods Group, Robinsons Bank, and Cebu Pacific.

Partnership with the Department of Education for the National Science and Technology Fair

Promoting innovation and STEM education Year established: 2019

The National Science and Technology Fair (NSTF) is an annual event of the Department of Education (DepEd) where bright young minds gather to present their scientific research and discoveries. From this competition, DepEd picks the winners who will represent the country in the prestigious Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF).

Realizing its thrust to promote STEM education, GBF supported DepEd in conducting the NSTF and in sending the delegates to Intel ISEF held in Phoenix, Arizona. Aside from covering the trip expenses, the Foundation also vested upon the 12 student-researchers a college scholarship and the very first Gokongwei Brothers Young Scientist Award.

Strengthening the University of the Philippines’ KaSaMa Teachers Online Community

Building the largest community of Filipino science and mathematics teachers Year established: 2019

In 2011, the University of the Philippines National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education Development (UP NISMED) established the KaSaMa (Ka-Science at Ka-Mathematics) Teachers Online Community to address the lack of quality resources, references, and learning opportunities in teaching K-12 science and mathematics, especially in public schools.

In 2019, GBF forged a partnership with UP NISMED to strengthen the project with the vision of building the largest community of Filipino science and mathematics teachers. Through technical and promotional support, GBF hopes to enable UP NISMED to optimize KaSaMa as a platform to scale quality teaching resources and encourage productive discussions with the end in view of improving teachers’ skills and uplifting the teaching profession.

Support for Philippine Business for Educations’ 1000 Teachers Program

Sponsoring outstanding college students who are majoring in education in STEM fields Year established: 2018

GBF sponsors outstanding college students taking bachelor’s degree in Education specializing in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) through the Philippine Business for Education’s (PBEd) 1000 Teachers Program. Launched in 2008, PBEd launched 1000 TP its flagship scholarship program that seeks to attract the best and the brightest in the teaching profession and improve teacher quality by placing 1000 outstanding teachers in the public education system.

GBF recognizes the significant role teachers play in advancing STEM in any nation. Teachers are crucial in igniting interest, nurturing passion, and improving the competencies of learners with high potential of being future quality STEM professionals to lead the Philippines toward sustainable national development.

Through a partnership with PBEd, GBF partakes in ensuring a pool of new-breed quality STEM teachers and consequently contributes in science culture building among Filipino learners in basic education.

Classroom Building Initiative with AGAPP Foundation

Answering educational needs at the community level Year Implemented: 2011

In 2011, to address the immediate needs of young children in underprivileged communities, GBF built 18 two-classroom preschool buildings in various provincial sites as part of the “Silid Pangarap” program of Aklat, Gabay, Aruga Tungo sa Pag-Angat at Pag-Asa (AGAPP) Foundation. GBF and AGAPP also provided training for teachers to equip them with tools that would give their students the best foundation as young learners.
