The Gokongwei Brothers Foundation (GBF) and Khan Academy Philippines (KA Ph) have officially launched MathTalino, a specialized, AI technology-enhanced learning initiative designed to help Filipino students struggling with numeracy. The program builds on Khan Academy’s successful pilot of the MathTalino summer remediation initiative, conducted last May-June 2025 across Quezon City, Valenzuela City, and Balanga City. MathTalino demonstrated how data-driven remediation, powered by AI and guided by skilled teachers, can rapidly close learning gaps. In just five weeks, learners’ math proficiency rose by as high as 70% on average. Teachers received targeted training on data-informed instruction using Khan Academy’s Khanmigo: an AI teacher productivity tool and student AI tutor offering real-time feedback and step-by-step support. Parents were also engaged throughout the program through weekly updates and individualized mastery report cards, creating a strong feedback loop between classroom and home.

MathTalino targets Grades 4 to 6 learners who score low in numeracy based on Department of Education (DepEd)-endorsed diagnostics and Khan Academy course proficiency. By combining world-class digital tools with classroom-based interventions, the program aims to build learners’ confidence, strengthen foundational math skills, and prepare students for academic progression. To maximize its impact, MathTalino will be implemented in public schools already using Khan Academy Philippines, with priority given to those also engaged in GBF’s flagship ClassBuilder program. The GBF Class Builder is an innovative educator capacity-building platform developed by the GBF to enhance teaching and enrich student learning. It combines teachers’ capacity building with classroom-ready learning materials, making it both a teaching tool and a learning resource in one platform. Through micro-coaching on content mastery and pedagogy, paired with complete teacher guides and lesson materials, the GBF Class Builder helps teachers deliver more engaging and effective lessons in Math.
Grace Colet, Executive Director of GBF adds, “The GBF Class Builder was co-designed with our DepEd teachers so it is very grounded in their reality of having overloaded schedules, no time for training and teaching subjects outside their specialization. We hope to ease our teachers’ burden and help develop their content mastery and pedagogy through an integrated approach using both the Teachers Guide and lesson materials working hand in hand to train our teachers. Ultimately, GBF Class Builder works to help teachers engage their students more, leading to better student learning outcomes in Math, Science and Reading"
In MathTalino schools that also use Class Builder, teachers are exposed to content and pedagogy reviews, together with teacher guides and materials for day-to-day instruction, while Khan Academy complements them through individualized, AI-powered practice for their learners. Together, the two programs create a coherent ecosystem that supports teachers in the classroom and students in their personal learning journeys. This ensures that schools benefit from the complementary strengths of technology-enabled educator capacity building and customized student remediation.
“By combining world-class technology with teacher empowerment, MathTalino shows what can be possible when data, innovation, and commitment come together in the classroom. This is not just about closing learning gaps—it’s about proving that every child can achieve excellence with the right support,” added Geraldine Acuña-Sunshine, Founder and CEO of Khan Academy Philippines.
In its initial rollout this school year, MathTalino will engage over 100 public-school teachers and 3,000 learners across key NCR divisions. This next phase builds on strong evidence that short, high-impact interventions can dramatically improve student confidence and numeracy proficiency in just a matter of weeks.
By integrating technology-driven learning with teacher-led mentorship, MathTalino takes the Filipino learner to a greater step toward improving numeracy outcomes and promoting equity in Filipino classrooms. This initiative underscores the belief that with the right tools and guidance, every student can build confidence, strengthen math skills, and thrive in their academic journey.
