For Arriadne Ysabelle Dela Cruz, the immense love that she receives from her mother motivated her to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Accountancy at the University of the Philippines – Diliman. “I was inspired to take this course because my mother recognized my potential in mathematics—I’ve been competing in math competitions since elementary school,” she shared.
Arriadne originally planned to study at a more expensive school than UP Diliman, pushing her to seek scholarships to lighten her mother’s financial responsibilities. It led her to the Gokongwei Brothers Foundation’s Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Scholarship for Excellence (GBF’s STEM SFE). “I felt like I might not pass STEM SFE because it's nationwide, and there are so many competitors,” she said. “Luckily, GBF emailed me for an assessment and interview, and I was able to pass.”
GBF grants STEM SFE to outstanding college students in the STEM field. In addition to financial assistance, this scholarship also offers personal development programs and on-the-job training opportunities. After graduation, STEM SFE scholars are provided with various employment opportunities at companies within the Gokongwei Group.
“My parents have been separated since I was little. Mom was the one who raised me,” Arriadne said, adding that her mother no longer had to spend much of her personal money because of STEM SFE.
Arriadne’s mother also taught her the importance of giving back to people who are in need. Her mother loved helping others whenever she had the capacity, doing so without hesitation. “She would often tell me that while we can enjoy life, there are people who ask for help from others just to get by daily,” Arriadne said, sharing how her mother’s outlook on life ignited her passion for giving back to communities such as orphanages.
The story of Arriadne and the love she receives from her mother is just one of the many sources of inspiration for GBF. As long as there are students in need of support, GBF remains steadfast in its commitment to helping STEM college students achieve their aspirations not only for themselves but also for their families and their communities.
