WHAT IS GBF?
GBF is a family foundation established by Gokongwei brothers John, Johnson, Henry, and James. It aims to fulfill the vision of Founder and Chairman, Mr. John Gokongwei, Jr., in helping improve the quality of education in the Philippines. GBF was first set up in 1992 to fund educational projects. The foundation has expanded since, by partnering with organizations and other stakeholders that share the same vision in promoting science and engineering education in the Philippines.
WHAT AREAS DOES GBF SPECIALIZE IN?
Mr. John Gokongwei, Jr. believes that science and engineering education will pave the Philippines’ path to industrialization. As such, the foundation works hard in promoting science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education in the country.
GBF has been running its Technical Training Center for over two decades. Here, high school graduates and out-of-school youth scholars are trained through a TESDA-registered program and an on-the-job immersion. These programs build their qualifications to work for companies under the Universal Robina Corporation. The foundation also grants college scholarships to students coming from low-income families, so that they can pursue a degree in science and engineering in top Philippine schools.
GBF also partners with key stakeholders in STEM education such as the Department of Education and the University of the Philippines.
WHAT HAS GBF ACHIEVED?
As of 2018, the foundation has helped over 500 scholars graduate. More than 200 of these scholars have been hired by JG Summit companies. GBF has also donated to 25 schools. Its biggest endowments were given to two of the country’s top universities, giving birth to the De La Salle University Gokongwei College of Engineering and the Ateneo John Gokongwei School of Management.
